Fifth Grade Field Trip
A New Partnership!
This year we are partnering with Cristo Rey High School to bring some of their students to our campus to help teachers and students, and to learn important skills for the workplace. Cristo Rey students spend five days a month at a worksite in Kansas City and work on a demanding course load the other four days of the week to meet their graduation requirements.
We wanted to highlight our students for you so that, when you see them, you might greet them by name and welcome them to our community. There are five students who come on Friday, all of whom are freshmen, so they are at the earliest stage of their involvement with Cristo Rey and with us.

Kiara Palmero is working in our early childhood program and says that she loves the work she is doing there! She says that she loves working with “the little kids” and that the staff have been great to her. She has an eight-year-old brother and a seven-year-old sister, wants to be a pediatrician, and enjoys playing soccer, swimming, and reading.
Ciara Reyes is helping Mrs. Cowan in fourth grade. She is enjoying both her experience at Cristo Rey, which she chose because of its high (100%!) college acceptance rate, and her work with students here, where she finds the teachers working hard to help the students succeed. She, too, wants to be a pediatrician and her hobby is basketball. Ciara has three sisters, ages three, eight and twenty-two.
Anjelica Hernandez is working with Mrs. Jones in fifth grade. She, too, believes in Cristo Rey because the people there have confidence that you will go on to college. She likes the students, finds the teachers to be professional, and knows there are opportunities to do many things that other high schools do not offer. Anjelica has a brother (age four) and three sisters (ages 19, nine and five). She is serious about her schoolwork, especially enjoying writing, but enjoys having fun and playing basketball and volleyball. She hopes to be a cosmetologist or firefighter.
Shayra Mata is working in the morning with the ECC students and in the afternoons with Senora Meli in Spanish, primarily because of her desire to work with our youngest students. She has two brothers (ages 22 and 19), a half-brother (23), and one sister (12). She chose Cristo Rey because “we have to work” and it’s a “really great high school”. She has enjoyed her experience there – and here at St. Paul’s -- so far. Shayra aspires to be a pediatrician and loves to hang out with her friends, go to movies, shop and text!
Jason Perez is working with Mrs. Zavagnin in admissions and, because of his passion for soccer, that’s a good fit! Jason has a brother (age 7) and sister (age 11) and chose Cristo Rey because he wanted a college prep course. He has been impressed with the school to date because of the great teachers. He wants to play soccer professionally when he grows up. Soccer, hanging with friends, and riding bikes are his hobbies.
Da’Vonna Garrett joins us on Tuesdays because she is a sophomore and that is their work placement day at Cristo Rey. She, too, is working with the early childhood students in the morning and with Senora Meli in the afternoons. She is one of eleven children ranging in age from a newborn to 17. She chose Cristo Rey because she felt like it would prepare her to be more successful in life. She says that she appreciates the respect that teachers and students show her at St. Paul’s. She feels that, because of her experience here, she will consider being a teacher. Da’Vonna’s hobbies include singing, dancing, roller skating, and reading, but she also says she’s got to have her sleep!
These interesting and dedicated young people are bringing much to our school and we hope that we are reciprocating with the guidance and support of our faculty.
Buddy Run
The Buddy Run will be held on Friday, October 14th. This wonderful new tradition at St. Paul's celebrates the Buddy Program while emphasizing the importance of fitness and friendship. Last year, school spirit and enthusiasm spread throughout the upper field as students cheered each other on and celebrated new friendships with their buddies.
All students will participate in the Buddy Run and all will receive a t-shirt to wear the day of our fun run! With a $25 donation per child, students will receive a St. Paul’s water bottle and a chance to win a SPEDS Prize Pack full of our new Spirit Wear! We encourage families to consider a donation beyond the suggested $25 per student registration. Aside from the Auction and the Annual Fund, the Buddy Run will be our only fundraiser for the 2011-2012 school year - we will not have greenery or trash bags sales. Register online today. https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/buddyrun2011 or print out an entry form and return it to school.
Our students will also have opportunities to raise money with sponsorships. We will give prizes for students with 5 or more sponsors, a Spirit Award to the buddy classes that show the most spirit at the Buddy Run and a Class Award for the class with the most collective sponsors -- teachers can participate, too! Print out a sponsor sheet for your child.
NEW THIS YEAR - we will have Buddy Run Sponsor Days! Wonderful partners stepped up to help us raise money this year - STUFF, Yogurtini and California Pizza Kitchen! So, when you shop or eat at one of these venues on a designated day, 15-20% of all St. Paul’s purchases will come back to the school! Be sure to mention the St. Paul’s Buddy Run or hand them the attached coupon when you pay!
October 4 - STUFF - mention that you are shopping for St. Paul’s
October 7 - Yogurtini Buddy Run Sponsor Day - mention St. Paul’s at the register
October 11 - California Pizza Kitchen Buddy Run Day - click here for coupon
We look forward to making this year’s Buddy Run/Walk another great experience for the entire St. Paul’s community.

SPEDS Musicians Featured at Kauffman Center's Opening Weekend
Several St. Paul's music teachers, as well as a St. Paul's parent, were featured performers at last weekend's Open House at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Guitar teacher Beau Bledsoe and parent Elizabeth Suh Lane were invited to be the featured performers at the major benefactors' dinner after the Itzhak Perlman grand opening of Helzberg Hall concert Saturday night.
Elizabeth and Beau performed at the Grand Opening event Sunday as well, with the Bach Aria Soloists. Beau's group Alaturka also played at the Grand Opening. Also on the line-up this weekend was SPEDS piano teacher Brad Cox performing with the Owen/Cox Dance Group, and SPEDS voice teacher Victoria Botero. In short, we are proud to have some of Kansas City's best artists leading our music program here!
Fifth Grade Field Trip
On Friday, September, 8 our fifth grade class rode the bus to Heartland Presbyterian Center in Parkville, Missouri. Once we got there we divided into groups and then went outside to start the fun activities. Some of the activities we did were the grid, whale watching, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, get across the lava, and peak to peak. After all of these fun activities, we ate lunch.
After lunch, we all did a group activity called the trust run. During the trust run everyone got into two lines facing each other with their arms straight out. Then, one person would run in between everyone and everyone had to lift up their arms when they ran by. Even though we had lots of fun, we also learned about the importance of teamwork. We learned that if you work together you can get things done faster. We also learned the importance of communicating and coming up with a plan before you start working. Overall, we had an awesome time at Heartland. I hope future fifth grade classes will enjoy it as much as we did.
