Get Hooked on a Good Book!

Please mark your calendar for family night at the book fair on Wednesday, November 7th from 3:30-5:30pm in the gymnasium.  Come peruse our fabulous selection of books, read a few with your child or set books aside for class visits on Thursday and Friday.  We will celebrate and encourage reading with buddy D.E.A.R. times (drop everything and read) and an all-school reading time during the week, as well as author visits during each divisional chapel on Thursday.  If you would like to help with the book fair, please click here for the schedule.  If you would like to bring treats for class visits during the book fair, please sign up here!

Parents' Guild Book Club

We will be meeting in the Garden Room at 8:15am on Thursday, November 15th.  The book we will be discussing is  American Dervish by Ayad Akhtar. This book has been met with amazing praise from reviewers and booksellers; it is a "coming of age story that illuminates the everyday lives of Muslims in America" but also provides universal insights.   Mr. Nerstheimer has a copy on hand for any adult interested in borrowing it. Please contact Joanne Reardon with any questions and/or to RSVP for the gathering at reardonjoanne@att.net.

Tucker Leadership Visits

On October 9, sixth graders went to Tucker Leadership Lab, located on the campus of William Jewell College in Liberty.  The 7th graders made their annual visit a few days later on October 11.  Under the direction of site leaders, small groups of students spent the day engaging in a variety of activities designed to foster goal setting, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.  This field trip provides a number of challenging activities which students approach with the general goal of finding a way for all to be successful.  The weather was perfect, the activities were engrossing, and a good time was had by all!

2012 Buddy Run

On October 12 the upper field was filled with big smiles, music, crazy costumes and lots of spirited kids   The 3rd Annual Buddy Run was a huge success grossing over $35,000. It has become a highly anticipated and fun tradition for our children each year, and this year was no exception.  It is a great pleasure to engage our children in a fundraiser that emphasizes fitness, friendship and fun.

The Parents' Guild Buddy Run is able to fund many programs that are important to our children and school, most notably, our Cultural Arts programming.  This includes field trips to the Kauffman, Nelson, Coterie and Kansas City Repertory Theater to curriculum enrichment programs put on at the school.  Thank you to everyone who made this great event possible!

Oregon Trail Day

On October 16 the third grade classes celebrated Oregon Trail Day.  The third graders dressed as pioneers and participated in old fashioned activities.  Some of the activities were writing with a quill and  ink, sewing quilt squares, making homemade applesauce, creating decorative tin punch designs, playing games and taking part in lessons in a “one-room schoolhouse”.  With the wonderful help of the 3rd grade parents, a delicious lunch was served.  It was a terrific day for everyone!
