St. Paul's Community Newsletter

Continuing our Chefs to Schools program is Jim Tinkham, Executive Chef for Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO.  Chef Tinkham will be at St. Paul’s serving lunch on May 6th.  Jim received his Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from The Culinary Institute of America in 1985.   Chef Jim was proud to serve his country as a member of The United States Marine Corp from 1980-1984.  Jim has also judged the National SKILLS USA Culinary Arts Championship and the JCCC Culinary Apprenticeship Graduation luncheon for the past eight years.  Chef Jim was also a semi-finalist for the 2013 National Chef of the Year!

MCTM Math Competition

St. Paul's was represented well at the MCTM math competition held at Barstow this past Saturday.  We had 15 competitors from 4th-6th grades compete in this "pre-math counts" competition.  Luke F., Pacey S., Mark H., Jack M., and Grant B. all won ribbons for placing in the top 5 of the competition. Congratulations to all!

Visitor in Fifth Grade

In conjunction with our study of economics and Exchange City, Jon Willis came and spoke to the entire 5th grade class about the Federal Reserve and its impact on our economy.  The students loved analyzing the dollar bill, unemployment rates, and even left with a "bag of cash" in the end.  Thanks to Mr. Willis for sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with us!

Kindergarten Mother's Lunch

On April 11th the mothers of our kindergarten classes were invited to come to lunch at St. Paul’s and enjoy some time with their child.   We enjoyed sandwiches from Mr. Goodscents and Bella Napoli and topped the lunch off with cookies the students made in cooking class.  This year we had Mrs. Zavagnin do some mother-child yoga moves/positions with each class.  Namaste!

On Friday, April 11th after the kindergarten mom’s celebration, we had a special presentation by Ryann and Addie Waller’s granddad, Dr. Cott, DVM  Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the College of Veterinary Medicine at MU.

Dr. Cott ( Doc) has traveled to Africa for more than 10 years and had just returned from a month long trip.  He had amazing pictures  for the students.  We studied Africa in kindergarten and researched animals that live all over Africa.  With this presentation we had an up close look at each of the animals.  Doc and Nana presented each of the kindergartners with a leather book mark from Africa.

Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day

What a wonderful day we enjoyed with hundreds of grandparents and special friends being on hand to experience a little of the work and play of our kindergarten, fourth and eighth graders!  Children were delighted to spend this time with these very special people and they, too, enjoyed the time and activities.  Our guests enjoyed activities that ranged from the academic to the physical and they participated wholeheartedly in all aspects.  In fact, the balloon game with the kindergarten families began to look like an athletic competition at one point!

Thanks to Cindy Wissinger and Katie Gregg, our Development staff, and Jill McGee, our Admissions Director for their work in ensuring that things went smoothly.  Thanks also to Gina Martin, our Food Service Manager, who provided the refreshments and table flowers.  We appreciate Larry Maddox and our maintenance crew, who spent a frantic day setting up and taking down chairs and tables throughout the school for the various events. And, of course, all of our faculty helped by creating the activities and the environment to share with our special guests.  It was a joyful day!

The Art Fair

Several years ago, we decided to move Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day to the day of our Art Fair so that our extended families could enjoy the artistic gifts of our students, as developed and displayed by our art teachers, Ms. Laird and Mrs. Crumpecker.  The display of four to five pieces of work, created by our kindergarten through eighth grade students during this school year, was, once again, amazing!  It was truly a gallery of art and a great representation of our children’s artistic development during their time here at St. Paul’s.  Students, parents, and guests enjoyed the show from morning until night – with students proudly finding and explaining their work and seeking the work of friends and buddies.

We were very sad that Ms. Laird could not join us to hear the accolades from all of the guests, due to the death of her father.  But Mrs. Crumpecker and all of us can let her know as we see her some of the great support she received that day.

Thank you to all of you who took time in your busy schedules to share this experience with your child.  It meant a lot to them for you to want to share their creative talents, too.

The Pillar's of St. Paul's Luncheon
The last event in our eighteen month celebration of our first fifty years was a huge success, thanks to the wonderful people who returned to the school to share with us the legacy they have created.  Of the five heads of school who have led St. Paul’s, four attended or were represented.  Mr. Richard Hill, son of Lida Hambrick, our founding head of school, flew in from Boston for this event and was both charmed and charming.  Nicole L’Heureux Flynn and her son, Jackson, came from Lawrence to represent Larry L’Heureux, our third head of school.  Nicole attended St. Paul’s for seventh and eighth grades so she was able to visit with former teachers she had known.  Terry Bartow, the fourth head of school, was here from Jacksonville, FL with his daughters, Katie and Samantha, who graduated from St. Paul’s.

Also in attendance were the three rectors during these fifty years of the school who are still alive:  Murray Trelease, who flew in from Washington state; Bob Wood, who resides here in Missouri and is still active in the church; and Stan Runnels, our current rector.

We were delighted that so many former trustees and teachers were able to join us and be reunited with each other and with our school as it is today.

Our message to this assembled group, as delivered very eloquently by Dave Hall, the President of our Board of Trustees, was the debt of gratitude we owe to all of these people for bringing us to this point in our history.  There have been challenges of many kinds during these years, but the people assembled represented the spirit of St. Paul’s that we can, quite literally in one case, rise from the ashes and continue to grow stronger.  There have always been those who would dig deeply into their pockets, and/or roll up their sleeves and get to work to ensure that our children were provided with the kind of education, in a faith-based environment, that they deserve.  It’s a proud heritage on which to build our future.

Jill Watt, the Chair of our Fifty Anniversary Celebrations, has been an incredible leader and partner in making all of the events of this special time possible:
-          She and husband, Joe, helped us create the 50th anniversary logo two years ago with the students, faculty, and staff of the school assembled on the playground and photographed from a helicopter that they arranged.
-          She helped us decorate the north wing MPR for the church celebration a year ago in January that was the first celebration.
-          She organized our parade, bringing in cheerleaders, all of the sports mascots, noisemakers, and so many of the ideas that made it special of all of us.
-          She and Joe hosted a Cinco de Mayo Party for all of our faculty and staff last spring that included amazing food, activities for the children in the lovely setting of their home where we could thank our current faculty and staff for all they have done and continue to do.
-          She helped us organize, develop, and manage the alumni celebration in November of this school year that brought almost 500 of our alums and their families back to the school for a joyous reunion.
-          And, last but by no means least, she helped us organize and execute the lovely luncheon we enjoyed on Friday.

And, as is true with any St. Paul’s event, there were so many other people who made these events as successful as they were that I could not begin to name them all.  But I want to sincerely thank Jill and Joe Watt, for their generous contributions of time, talent and resources to the recognition of our Fiftieth Anniversary over a two year span of time, and to all of the volunteers who helped them.  Thank you to everyone who has helped make each of our 50th Anniversary events so special.  God bless St. Paul’s history and its future!
