Community Newsletter

On April 14th, it will be GAME ON here at school, where we transform the multi-purpose room into a cocktail party and silent auction and the gym into - well, a gym. Please make plans to attend this annual event - the largest fundraiser sponsored by your Parents' Guild.

But before then, there are a few pre-game rallies. First, kick off the auction season at Game Night, at Dave and Krista Peterson's home on Saturday, January 28th. While there, sign up for extra innings at the Auction After-Party, to be held at Jeff and Mary Morris' home. In addition, Randy Kurt will be on-hand to recruit teams and players for the 2nd Annual Benefit Games on March 2nd and 3rd (see below for more information).

Buy your raffle tickets now , or at the kick-off party. Either way, you won't be disappointed in the items to be raffled. But first, there will be a special raffle at Game Night for those that purchase tickets - ALL-STAR SEATING at the live auction! You and seven friends can enjoy special accommodations with a reserved table on the fifty-yard line (sold for $150 apiece, normally). TOUCHDOWN! Your ticket will then go back into the mix for the raffle items that will be drawn at the auction. You need not be present to win.

Alvin Ailey Visits St. Paul’s
Alvin Ailey is a very talented group of dancers that have a passion for dance.  They travel all around the world to perform.  Three Alvin Ailey dancers came to St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School to express what they love most about the dance company and to show how great cultural dancing can be.  They told the story of how the dance company began.  Alvin Ailey, a young African American boy, grew up with a great friend that took dance lessons, and Alvin would always watch in amazement.  He was so interested that he himself started dance lessons and then later began choreographing.  The Alvin Ailey Headquarters are located in New York and classes are available for all ability levels and ages.  We enjoyed the performance and watching St. Paul’s students learn some of the dance moves as well.  Thanks, Cultural Arts Committee for bringing such great performers to the school!

Lunch Committee News
The SPEDS Lunch Committee would like to thank those who came to see FOOD INC as well as the parents, faculty and students who took the time to fill out the lunch program survey last semester. We really appreciate you taking the time to do this.   We would like to provide a review of answers to the parents, faculty and student surveys.

First, there were 58 parents that took the survey.  The majority of those parents have children in Kindergarten through 5th grade (82.8%).  Parents buy lunch two-three times a week (26.3%) or two-three times a month (22.8%).  They buy lunch because they feel their children like it (81.8%) or when they don’t have time to make their lunch (43.2%).  Parents whose children do not eat school lunch responded that they don’t like the food (57.1%) or it is too expensive (50%).  Most parents feel there is enough food included with the school lunch (74.4%) whereas 25.6% of parents feel that there isn’t enough food.  Parents surveyed said that their children’s favorite lunch entrees are pizza (51%), chicken nuggets (49%) and salad bar (47.1%).  Least favorite entrees included stuffed peppers (82.4%), pork (51%) and eggs (35.3%).  Favorite side dishes are fresh fruit (80.4%) and raw vegetables (49%).  The majority of children drink water (46.4%) with their lunch while others drink 1% milk (28.6%) or chocolate milk (28.6%) with their lunch.

Next, there were 238 students who took the survey.  Students said they eat lunch two-three times a week (20.2%) or once a month (21%).  There were 19.3% of students who said they eat lunch every day.  Students responded they eat lunch because they like it (33%) or they buy lunch when they don’t have time to make their own lunch (43.1%).  Those students who don’t eat school lunch responded that they don’t like the food (70.6%) or it is too expensive (26.5%).  Most students feel that there is not enough food included with school lunch (57.2%) whereas 37.8% feel that there is just enough.  Favorite lunch entrees are pizza dunkers (58.1%), chicken tenders (48%) and pizza (32.3%).  Least favorite entrees are stuffed peppers (70.9%), eggs (49%) and pork (40.3%).  Favorite side dishes are French fries (75.3%), bread and fresh fruit (both 50%).  Most students responded that they drink water with lunch (56.4%).

Lastly, there were 44 faculty members who completed the survey.  Most faculty members eat lunch every day (81.8%) because they like it (72.1%) and it is free (62.8%).  Those that don’t eat lunch either don’t like the food or they follow a special diet or have food allergies.  The majority of faculty members are not willing to pay for school lunch (59.5%) whereas some felt that they would be willing to go up to ½ the cost ($2-3 per day).  There are some faculty members that would pay the full cost of lunch (11.9%).  Faculty felt enough food was being provided with school lunch (90.7%) and some felt that there was too much food (9.3%).  Favorite lunch entrees are salad bar (79.1%), soup bar (74.4%) and sandwich bar (55.8%).  Least favorite entrees are pancakes (50%), chicken nuggets (47.4%) and eggs (34.2%).  Favorite sides are fresh fruit (69.8%), salad (62.8%), and raw vegetables (55.8%).  The majority of faculty drank water with lunch (56.8%) followed by tea (27.3%).

Parents, faculty and students had an opportunity to add their own specific comments within the survey as to what they would like to see added to the lunch menu as well as suggestions to improve the current lunch program.  There are too many to list here but we have read them all and have heard your concerns.   Our milk switch from Roberts Dairy to Good Natured Family Farms has been very popular as well as the bread switch from Sara Lee to Farm to Market.  Hopefully you have also noticed many new menu options on the monthly lunch menu.

Thanks again for your interest and time!

Volunteer Day at Harvesters
The room parents organized a class volunteer day at Harvesters on Martin Luther King Day.  One eighth grade homeroom put together boxes, packaged assorted meats in to 30 lb boxes of meat, and labeled them.  The other group transferred onions from large mesh bags in to smaller bags.  Harvesters feeds 66,000 people a week here in Kansas City and 16 zip codes in Kansas.

It was a great way to spend MLK holiday—in service to our community.

Endangered Species Postcard Contest
Sixth graders participated in Missouri’s Department of Conservation Endangered Species postcard contest.  Sydney H’s postcard was chosen as the first place winner in grades 5-6.  Her postcard is being published and will be for sale at many conservation sites throughout the state.  Three other students Emma L., Natalie K., and Caroline R., were top ten finalists.

Basketball
Our twelve 5th-8th grade basketball teams are off to a great start this season with an overall record of 33-9.

Check out the game schedules on the league website:  www.kcmpsl.com  Schedules are subject to change.

Speech Tournament
During the last part of second quarter, seventh and eighth grade speech students worked on giving extemporaneous speeches.  These are speeches where students draw a topic from a group selected by the teacher, spend five minutes preparing a speech on that topic, and then speak to the rest of the class for two minutes.  After each student completed three extemporaneous speeches, the top three eighth graders and top four seventh graders participated in a mini-tournament while the rest of the students served as the audience.  Seventh grade participants were Andy H., Megan L., Clair M., and Drake R.  Eighth grade participants were Kit F., Ellison R., and Dominic T.  After much careful deliberation on the part of judges, Mrs. Rousey and Mr. Van, first, second, and third places were awarded to Ellison, Kit , and Dominic respectively.  Congratulations to all participants in this difficult competition!

Middle School has been busy!
On Jan. 10, the 8th grade visited the National World War One Museum.  Students were led on a tour observing archival film footage, reproductions of trenches, weaponry and uniforms.  Carl DiCapo, a grandparent of an alum of St. Paul’s was instrumental in the building of this museum.

On Jan. 12, the entire middle school took part in an interactive demonstration put on by the Alvin Ailey Dance Company.  Students took part in the dancing, observed live performing and then ended with a question and answer session.

On Jan. 13, the 6th grade traveled to the Rose Theater at Rockhurst High School for a performance of The Giver.  This opera features several area actors with ties to St. Paul’s.
