Thank you to all of our current families for the smooth re-enrollment process this spring.  This is a reminder that the cancellation policy (as seen below) states that you must withdraw by May 1, 2012 in order to forfeit only the deposit.  After May 1, you become responsible for 50% of the full year tuition.  After June 15, 2012, families are responsible for 100% of the tuition regardless of whether the student attends.  Please contact Miriam Zavagnin immediately if you plan to withdraw.  Of course, we hope all of you will return!

Contract Cancellation:  I/We agree to assume all personal and financial responsibilities expressed or implied in this contract.  I/We further understand this is a contract for a full year. Cancellation of this contract must be received in writing by the Director of Admissions on or before May 1, 2012.  After this date the undersigned becomes responsible for 50% of the full year tuition.  After June 15, 2012, the undersigned agree that tuition for the entire year is due, regardless of whether the child actually attends.

French Fashion Show

On Wednesday, April 18th, the 6th grade French class strutted their stuff down a runway on the 3rd floor.  Students wrote a description of their outfit and one of their peers read it aloud.  Their parents watched as each of our awesome models walked the runway.  It was a wonderful end to their study of clothing and corresponding adjectives.  Quels beaux enfants!

St. Paul’s Episcopal Science Olympiad team received 6th place ranking out of the 32 teams at State this year!

Jesse Hall at the University of MO was packed with both middle school and high school teams as the medals, ribbons and MU scholarships were presented on stage and freebies from the university were hurled into the mass of students. Most of the storms passing through were avoided but two outside events, Bottle Rockets and Storm the Castle were cancelled. The students were very stoic about this disappointment. Congratulations to team members Tucker, Samantha, Kit, Veronica, Chris, George, Ellison, Sophie, Max, Philip, Elyse, Meghan, Lilly, Claire, Lily and Drake. Team members placing in their events were: Ellison and Sophie awarded 5th in Compute This; Sophie, Ellison and Veronica awarded 5th in Experimental Design; Samantha and Max awarded 5th place in Road Scholar; Meghan and Elyse awarded 2nd place in Water Quality; and Sophie and Ellison awarded 3rd place in Write It/Do It.

Mr. Stewart and Ms. Twyman enjoyed traveling with this wonderful group of scholars very much. The team members, Mr. Stewart and Ms. Twyman want to acknowledge the love and support of the parents who traveled with the team and made the trip possible, safe and lots of fun: Dr. Haistings, Mrs. Rooney, Dr. Chinnock, Mrs. Prochnow and Mr. McCann. The team is also grateful to the team parents this year and Mrs. Martin and Dr. Jeanine Haistings.

Spanish Immersion Camp

At the end of March, ten 7th graders and two 8th graders traveled with Mrs. Reynolds to the north woods of Minnesota for a unique immersion experience in Spanish.  The group flew to Minneapolis where they boarded a charter bus and traveled north to Concordia Language Villages, just outside of Bemidji, Minnesota.  El Lago de Bosque is one of the 15 different “villages” surrounding Turtle Lake, and the purpose of these weekend programs is to immerse students in the spoken language.  All of the counselors at Lago de Bosque are native speakers from a variety of Spanish-speaking countries.  From the moment students step off the bus, they are spoken only in the target language as they make their way through “customs,” where they must give up “contraband” such as cell phones, iPads, or any reading material in English.  Then it is on to the bank where they must exchange US dollars for pesos, the currency of the camp.  They receive their housing and dining assignments, select a Spanish name to use during the camp, and sign up for various small group activities for the next day.

Then the fun begins!  Each year there is a specific target country which is the focus of all activities and food.  This year the target country was Spain, so for the first evening, students enjoyed paella, the national dish of Spain.  All food authentically reflects the cuisine of the target country, just as all of the camp buildings reflect authentic architecture of the culture.  Students participate in a beginning rotation that teaches them about the history, cuisine, music, art, dance, and pastimes of the target country.  Later they participate in the small group activities, which include sports, arts and crafts, and cooking.  Counselors are constantly working to be sure everyone understands the spoken language, and they encourage the students to communicate as much as possible in Spanish.  Three St. Paul’s students, Haley B.,  Monty L., and Drake R. received “Super Español” awards for surviving the challenge of speaking only in Spanish for half a day.  Additionally, Drake received an award from a counselor who observed him constantly working to speak only in Spanish with other students as well as the counselors.

Although the flight home was delayed, making for a late Sunday night, all agreed it was the perfect opportunity to try out their language skills.  Those who attended were Abria A., Haley B., Ashley B., Monty L., Cora M., Caroline Mc., Lauren Mc., A’Starr M., Drake R., Rachael S., Danny T., and Sydney W.

A Round of Applause!

Congratulations to the students who competed in the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathmatics math competition held at Barstow this past month.  St. Paul’s was well represented within each of the two categories:  concepts and problem solving.  Caroline S., Zach T., Jacob K. and Pacey S. will all be competing at the state contest in Springfield on Saturday, May 5. The MCTM competition is sponsored by Christine Cowan and Linda Glass.

Game On! A Slam Dunk!
By Amy Holewinski and Sarah Telford

On April 14th, it was GAME ON! for St. Paul’s, as our community of parents, teachers, staff and church members came together to celebrate our school at the annual auction. The evening got started with a silent auction and cocktails enjoyed in the multipurpose room, followed by dinner and an amazing rendering of the “Star Spangled Banner” by our own Jenny Murphy, who brought the house down! After a slide show featuring each and every child at St. Paul’s, the real fun began, with spirited bidding on amazing live auction items. Thank you to all who attended the auction, donated items and underwriting, bought raffle tickets and advertising, signed up for parties, and have supported fund-a-need.

We would like to thank our amazing team of volunteers who helped make the event a success. Hosting the auction at school was no easy feat – it took many volunteers pitching in, going above and beyond their own committee responsibilities and we so appreciate the efforts of all involved.

We are thrilled to report that we achieved our record-breaking goal, grossing over $294,000! We are overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of our St. Paul’s community, and we are pleased to report that we also have met the needs for both Phase 1 (the asphalt track) and Phase 2 (the basketball half-court) of fund-a-need, and are well on our way to achieving the goal for Phase 3 (the swing set)! If you would like to donate to fund-a-need and have not yet done so, click here to donate now.

Fifth Grade Goes to Exchange City
By: Julia Kerrigan

On Tuesday, April 17th, our fifth grade class put testing on hold to go to a great learning experience, Exchange City. If you haven’t heard of it, it is really quite easy to explain. The students run the city. Yep, kids. We spent the day cashing and writing checks, paying off loans, and pretty much doing what adults do at their jobs.

St. Paul’s also had a companion school to make the city function the best it could. We were joined by St. Charles in this awesome learning experience. As we made money, wrote checks, and sold products, a great economy began to form. Simple, yes, but it was something entirely new to us.

So, if you ask your child, “How do you write a check?” or “What is a deposit?” chances are, they probably know. Exchange City is that good.

2012-2013 Parents Guild Slate

Every parent of a current St. Paul’s student is a member of the Parents’ Guild, and each parent is entitled to vote. Please cast your vote here by Wednesday, May 2nd.

Where were you in September of 1985?

There is a new bronze medallion installed on the sidewalk off of Main Street in front of our school.  It reads "An estimated 40,000 pounds of shredded paper drifted along the parade route as Kansas City celebrated the Royal's 11-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1985 World Series." Do you remember this celebration?  If so, click here to tell us about it on St. Paul's Episcopal Day School Alumni Association Facebook page!
