Parents' Guild April Book Club

Please join the Parents' Guild Book Club on Tuesday, April 30th at 8:30 am in the Garden Room of the church for discussion of the novel The Cutting Season by award-winning author Attica Locke.  Michelle Johnson, our fantastic Diversity Coordinator at St. Paul's, has agreed to lead the discussion of this book.  The Cutting Season is a page-turning mystery that involves intriguing issues of race in Louisiana in both modern times and during the slavery era.  It should provide a fun, interesting and thoughtful discussion.  We hope you will join us!  Questions? Please contact Joanne Reardon at 816-532-6181.

 JDRF Honors
Seventh grader Zach J. was recently chosen in a very tough competition, to go to Washington D.C. this summer to engage in conversations with government officials about diabetes.  Zach has worked hard as a diabetic to find ways to educate the population at large about diabetes.  Much of his efforts are part of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  Bonnie Maddox of the JDRF presented Zach with his honor during a middle school chapel on Monday, March 4th.

Sixth Grade French
In February the 6th grade french students participated in the FLES Contest.  (French Language Elementary School).  It is a listening comprehension test given to French students in grades 1 – 6.  Twelve of our students will have their scores submitted for national consideration.  Félicitations à tous!

Godspell

The St. Paul’s Community was treated to a joyous and uplifting performance of "Godspell" on Thursday night, March 14. The talents of our 7th and 8th graders were amazing and left the audience in awe and tears of joy. Even with four cancelled rehearsals due to snow, these actors and singers were able to create and perform a rousing and touching performance that "Day by Day" will continue to "Bless My Soul".

Chinese Brush Painting Workshop for Second Grade
The Cultural Arts Committee brought Kansas City Young Audiences to the second grade.  Valda Hsu, held a Chinese brush painting workshop.  The children used authentic Chinese bamboo brushes and learned the techniques of brush painting.  The class painted penguins which were perfect for this snowy time of year.

Standardized Testing
Standardized testing for grades 3 – 7 will take place the week of April 15 – 18.  Students will spend approximately two hours each morning completing different sections of the test.  We are using the newest version of the Stanford Achievement Test, the SAT-10.  This version is untimed, thus removing some of the anxiety and pressure children might feel during the testing sessions.    All students are given practice tests in the weeks before the formal test dates.  During the practice tests, students are free to ask questions of the teacher.  During the course of the testing session, students are provided breaks.  We reassure the students that these tests are not something on which they receive a grade.
Parents can be helpful to their child in many ways:
  • Provide your child with a high protein breakfast each morning.  Send an extra healthy snack for the afternoon.
  • See that your child gets a full night’s sleep.
  • Encourage your children to do their best and reassure them that they are not expected to answer every question correctly.  Some questions may seem very easy, some will seem difficult.
  • Remind them the tests are not graded.
The school will send the answer documents for machine scoring as soon as possible after all students’ test sections are completed.  The school receives the results in June.  You will be mailed a copy of your child’s results soon afterwards.

We appreciate your interest and support of your child’s results and are happy to interpret them with you in the first quarter of next school year.

Third Grade Rainforest
On March 5th, the third grade concluded their study of the Rainforest with an open house for their parents, grandparents and other special friends.  Over one hundred people attended the open house, which consisted of tours given by third graders and Rainforest cuisine.  The third graders began studying the Rainforest in January.  Each third grader studied a Rainforest animal and became an “expert” on their animal as well as learning a fascinating fact about each classmate’s animal. Prior to the open house the third graders gave tours to the ECC and Lower School students.  Along with studying an animal, the third graders also learned about the different layers of the Rainforest, different Rainforest plants and products, people of the Rainforest, and graphs of rainfall.  The third graders worked hard throughout the unit and created one of the best Rainforests ever!
