Life Skills in Action
Kindergarten students use their sense of humor and pose for a silly picture wearing their 100 Day celebration necklaces.
Students counted out 100 Cheerios, sorted them in groups of ten, strung the Cheerios and the result is a beautiful, edible necklace.

Clean Water for Haiti
This month, Ellen Aisenbrey and John Carothers, two of our Haiti Committee members, will be returning to Ravine a l'Anse to visit our sister school, l'Ecole St. Croix in Haiti.
They will be delivering water filters to give to the teachers. We're working with the teachers to bring water filters to all of our students and families. And that brings me to the story of water at Holy Cross School.
Many years ago, our partners at l'Ecole St. Croix dug a well down the hill, on the east side. And through the years, the well provided water, to a degree. For many years, they pumped water by hand into buckets, which they would carry every day, up the hill to the school and out to the countryside for the local families. At one time, they even laid pipe and one of our parishioners donated a gas powered electric generator to bring water to the school. But, the conditions of Haiti took their toll... the generator wasn't used properly...the well went dry...and finally the soil around the well collapsed.
Last year, our friends began to dig a new well, on the west side. They found the soil contained more solid rock and they were able to dig deeper. Now keep in mind, digging a well is not easy. Because the roads are so inaccessible, no drill rig could get up the mountain to the school. So, everyday, a man would dig a little deeper by hand. Imagine a hole, 4 feet in diameter, 45 feet deep. Now imagine a man, climbing down the hole, everyday, digging just a little deeper, eventually breaking through a rock layer of shale to find water.
Now, parents of the students pump water by hand and carry buckets up to the school and families visit the well every day for a few buckets of water. But the water isn't clean. The well water has never been clean. It contains bacteria and can make you sick. And that’s where the filters come in.
Ellen and John will be delivering water filters from Sawyer Filters. We've raised enough money to give each of the teachers a filter that they can take and use at home. With their example, we believe the families will want water filters to put into each of their homes.
We've brought filters down to the school before, but they haven’t caught on. Even with clean water at school, the students and teachers have gone home to bad water. We’re now trying to get clean water at home. If you have bad water at home, it doesn't matter if you have clean water at school.
Clean water is just part of our partnership with Holy Cross School. We’re working to give our students a good education, but we can’t do that if they are sick. Because of your support, we have helped provide a working water well and clean water. Thank you for your continuing support of the Haiti Committee.
