Dream Big! Auction
Saturday, March 28, 2015
Starlight Theatre
It’s almost here! Do you have your ticket to help make big dreams come true at St. Paul’s? If not, now is the time to purchase your ticket and join us as we DREAM BIG at the 2015 Parents’ Guild Auction on Saturday, March 28th at 6 p.m. The Starlight Theatre main stage will be transformed for an evening filled with St. Paul’s spirit, fun, and fabulous auction items!
Our tireless auction co-chairs Kelly Groebl, Suzanne Raney and Karen Seitter, and the auction committee and staff have been working for many months now to plan an evening that will make our St. Paul’s dreams come true!
You will have an opportunity to make a meaningful gift to enhance our students’ experiences through this year’s Fund-A-Need projects. During the live auction, the three unique projects will directly impact the students: scoreboards for the gymnasium, an outdoor gathering space for students and faculty, and shade for the toddler/preschool playground.
Additionally, you can continue to Dream Big as you peruse the amazing amount of silent and live auction items up for bidding. How about a week in France in a spectacular two-bedroom apartment in the heart of Bohemian Paris, an exclusive sideline experience at the Chiefs’ summer training camp for 10 guests, or a coveted reserved parking spot right in front of the school for a year?!
Still not enough to tempt you to Dream Big? How about winning tuition for one student for the 2015-2016 school year OR $10,000 cash. You win. You choose! You can purchase raffle tickets at the auction, or online now by clicking here.
So don’t miss out on making yours, and the children’s, big dreams come true on Saturday, March 28th. See you at Starlight!
For more information on the auction or tickets, please contact Katie Gregg or Cindy Wissinger in the Development office.
S.T.A.R. Power Program
Aimee Hoflander from the Children's Mercy S.T.A.R Power program came to visit with third and fourth grade during P.E. to discuss ways to be strong, talented, authentic and resilient kids. She spoke with third grade about healthy eating and fourth grade about self-esteem. One example shared in her healthy eating discussion included showing students how many sugar packets (4 grams of sugar in each) are in a Coca-Cola. For more information about the program, click here.
Friendship Fridays
Kindergartners look forward to time set aside each week for Friendship Fridays. Students focus on fun activities for 15 minutes that bring our classes together in friendship.
Last Friday, children took turns sitting with their back to the rest of the class and a “mystery classmate” came up and whispered to their back, ”I’m your friend.” The kindergartner in the chair then tried to guess which friend it was!
African Animals
Kindergarten students worked with their sixth grade buddies to write a report on their assigned African animal. They also worked together to make their African animals out of construction paper.
Since both grades are learning about Africa, they enjoyed spending time working together on these projects!
Mathcounts
Saturday, February 7, found 10 St. Paul’s Middle School students solving math problems at the 2015 Missouri Western Mathcounts chapter competition. Eighth graders Alex A., Julia K., and Gage K., seventh graders Abby L., Braden A., and Mark H., along with sixth graders Charley D., Jack M., Grant B., and Anna B. represented our school. Our four-person team of Julia, Gage, Braden and Grant brought home a third place trophy. Gage and Grant qualified for the state competition as individuals.
St. Paul’s Middle School Students Recognized in Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest
This year, our seventh and eighth grade students competed for the first time in the Patriot's Pen Essay Contest, a national writing contest sponsored by the V.F.W. This year's theme was “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans?” Judges from the Claude B. Champion, Post 1829 and Sugar Creek Memorial, Post 3976 of Kansas City selected the winning essays from St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School. Congratulations to Greta H. (7), Mark H. (7), Harrison R. (7), Abby L. (7), Caroline W. (7), Pacey S. (7), and Katie A. (7) for receiving Honorable Mentions.
Post winners Jackie B. (7), Brynn S. (8), Elle A. (8), and Olivia B. (8) attended a special reception where they were recognized along with post winners from other Kansas City schools. District winners were also announced. Jackie B.’s essay took Third Place and Elle A.’s essay took First Place. Elle will advance to the next level of the competition. Congratulations to all of the students on their superlative writing!
3rd Grade Rainforest
On March 3, the third grade concluded their study of the rainforest with an open house for their parents, grandparents and other special friends. More than 150 people attended the open house, which consisted of tours given by third graders and rainforest cuisine. The third graders began studying the rainforest in January. Each third grader studied a rainforest animal and became an “expert” on their animal. Prior to the open house the third graders gave tours to the ECC and Primary students. Along with studying an animal the third graders also learned about the different layers of the rainforest, rainforest plants, people of the rainforest, wrote rainforest poetry, and created graphs of rainfall. The third graders worked hard throughout the unit and created one of the best rainforests ever.
From the Diversity Coordinator
Our Diversity Coordinator, Michelle T. Johnson, has started a new Middle School initiative called “Cookies and Conversation” where she leads a lunchtime conversation about current events and issues. The first luncheon was for eighth graders on February 26 where 17 students signed up and attended. The students participated in a lively conversation about Digital Citizenship. The topics discussed included the hazards of putting up Social Media pictures and posts that would put themselves and others in a bad light, as well as discussing the safety issues. Also discussed was the policy regarding use of electronic devices by the students during the school day – the students had both thoughtful and amusing reasons of why they believe the device policy should be more liberal. Thank you to our Cultural Climate chairperson, Jill Watt, for providing delicious home-baked cookies! Future luncheons are planned with the seventh and sixth graders, as well as a mix of ages.
From the Admissions Office
Please recommend St. Paul’s to your friends, colleagues and family. While a few classes are in “wait pool” status for next year, others still have availability. If you know of a family with a child between the ages of two-years-old and seventh grade (currently), please refer them to the Admissions Office (816) 268-6542. We are still accepting applications for all grade levels, and are happy to meet with any family interested in our great education and community. Thank you for keeping us “top of mind”! We love having our own parents and grandparents recommend St. Paul’s!
