Graduation Updates
This month we are celebrating graduation at St. Paul's and across the country.  In addition to the St. Paul's Class of 2015, the Class of 2011 is celebrating high school graduations and many members of our Class of 2007 are graduating from colleges and universities.  Graduation updates will be posted on our St. Paul's Alumni Association Facebook page.  Click here for the page, and be sure to "like" the page for regular updates.

As you share graduation photos and messages on social media, be sure to include #stpaulsgrad.  You can also share your graduation pictures with us at alumni@speds.org.  We love to share updates on the success of our graduates!

In the fall, we invited the St. Paul’s community to join us in supporting the Annual Fund. This campaign helps us bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of a St. Paul’s education. Hundreds of families stepped forward to donate or pledge their support, and we are excited to share that we have received gifts and commitments for 92% of our $270,000 goal.

These funds are already at work in the school’s operating budget to help provide new textbooks, internet service for classrooms, play equipment, and facilities maintenance and improvements. Annual Fund gifts also strengthen our community by enhancing professional development opportunities for teachers and need-based financial assistance for more than 15% of our students.

If you have already made your gift, thank you! We are so grateful to every parent, grandparent, alumni family and friend who has shown their support through the Annual Fund.
If you have not yet made your gift to the Annual Fund, will you join us?  Now is the time to help us finish strong!

Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day

On Wednesday, April 22, St. Paul's kindergartners, fourth graders and eighth graders took time to show appreciation of their grandparents and special friends.  We love this St. Paul's tradition that includes chapel, a tour of the art fair and classroom activities that are thoughtfully prepared by the students and their teachers.

Sixth Grade at Burr Oak Woods

Sixth grade made the annual trip to Burr Oak Woods for their field study day in conjunction with their lessons on Conserving Missouri’s Aquatic Ecosystems.  Students spent the day searching for and identifying macroinvertebrates in the pond, fishing for bluegill and catfish, and going on a nature walk.  The day was a success thanks to the parents, grandparents and an uncle who volunteered.

Fourth and Fifth Grade Students take on the Internet
Last quarter fourth and fifth grade students took the USA-SOS (Safe Online Surfing) Internet challenge (http://www.usa-sos.org) as part of their digital citizenship training.    In this program students take a pre-test, then complete 10 scavenger hunts on online safety and cyber citizenship.  After the scavenger hunts, they take a post-test.  The program compares the top ten scores on the post-test with grade level teams throughout the country.  Our fourth grade placed third and the fifth grade placed ninth nationally.

World Culture Night
On April 30, Mr. Stewart’s eighth grade World Geography classes invited
family and friends to the annual World Culture Night presentation. Throughout
the third floor, the sights, sounds, and fragrances of our greater global community
were everywhere.

World Culture Night is the culminating project for the year’s study in world geography. Traditional costumes and foods were created and prepared by the students to share with their guests. Students also created websites that detailed the history, geography, government, economy and demographics of their chosen country. Present were cultural “ambassadors” from Tahiti, Bahamas, Norway, Ethiopia, South Korea, Fiji, Scotland, Iceland, Philippines, Switzerland, France, Mexico, Jamaica, Ireland, Japan, Sweden, Cuba, Germany, Greece and Italy. Congratulations to the eighth grade for their hard work in creating such a wonderful evening.

Solar System Installation

The school recently installed two 50KW solar system units on each story of the north school building. Together, the systems will generate approximately 10% of the overall electrical need of the school. A significant part of the project funding is provided by an energy reduction rebate program through KCP&L.  Installation of the system(s) is complete and will soon become active.

ROAD Rally

On Friday, May 15 the fourth grade performed an exciting dance performance for students, teachers and friends.  Each year, the fourth grade works with a member of the Kansas City Ballet to put together a performance as well as play games and exercise using dance, rhythm and movement.

Reach Out And Dance is the Kansas City Ballet's exciting  community program. ROAD's mission is to motivate children through dance experiences that help them achieve tasks related to life skills and personal achievement.  For children, ROAD emphasizes discipline, teamwork, dedication and self awareness through dance.

Walk-A-Thon for Haiti

The middle school students participated in a walk-a-thon for Haiti on May 8 at Mill Creek Park on  the Plaza.  This student initiated event raised more than $7,400 for our school.  The money will go primarily for buying and planting trees that will benefit the people in a variety of ways.  Moringa trees have a root system that does not require much water.  The trees provide a source of protein for the population and will reduce deforestation.  Congratulations to all of the students on a fine service opportunity.

1st Grade Lemonade Stand

On Friday, May 1 the first grade took part in the fifth annual lemonade and cookie stand for Haiti.  The planning was integrated into first grade’s social studies and math curriculum. The students brainstormed names for the stand and created their own fliers for marketing the stand.  The students also learned about the concept of supply and demand as they discussed the purchase price of the lemonade and cookies which sold for 50 cents a piece. It ended up being a beautiful spring evening for our stand titled… “A PENNY OR A DIME…MAKE HAITI SHINE!” With the help and support of many parents, the first grade raised a grand total $3,357.16!  Thank you to all who helped and supported the first grade in this amazing endeavor, we could not have done it without you!
